Special Vancouver

The Vancouver special is an architectural style of residential house developed in Metro Vancouver, Canada. The style was popular from the 1960s to 1980s due to an ability to maximize floor space with relatively cheap construction costs.

To get around planning rules, the first floor was slightly below ground level permitting it to be classified as a “basement”. And due to the size, it could house two families, one on each floor. As explained in the video below.
